Dividends, Investment Portfolio News & More

Personal Highlights for October:

  • First of all, Happy Halloween.  The kids had a great time, scored a ton of candy and were cute as ever.
  • Indoor soccer season has started up.  Played our first two games and have come to the realisation I am old as fuck.  I definitely need to start running on the treadmill a bit more.
  • Speaking of Soccer – Canada beat the USA in a competitive match for the first time in 30+ years.  This is HUGE news for Canada soccer fans, and puts us in a good spot for World Cup qualifying.  They play again this month (November 15) in Orlando.
  • The NHL season is still young, but  between the Jets sucking and most my fantasy team(s) being full of injuries, it’s not looking good.
  • Last week while eating an Oh Henry at work, my crown (root canal) came off.  I had a temporary one put in and have to get a new one remade and put in next week.
  • Traded one of my bottles of Weller Antique bourbon for Makers Mark 101.  I had previously picked up a few bottles of Weller Antique on sale, and you cannot buy Makers Mark 101 in North America, so I thought what the hell.  Looking forward to trying it.

I recently posted about how even though dividend income is great, for us younger investors it is important not to ignore total returns.  I also challenged other bloggers to start posting their returns along with their income.  Rob from Passive Canadian Income recently posted his monthly updated and included his trailing 12 month returns.  You can see his updated HERE.  Rob posted a very impressive trailing 12 month return of 17.17%!

I have my account split between RRSPs (mostly index funds/Mutual Funds) and my TFSA (where I choose individual Canadian stocks).  My trailing 12 month returns are as follows:

TFSA: 18.42%

RRSP: 5.63%

Also my returns since I started direct investing (since inception):

TFSA: 15.35%

RRSP: 7.31%
