August 2018 Dividend Update

Personal Finance Blog Update dividends early retirement FIRE Jordan Maas

Goodbye August – Hello September!

Personal Highlights for August:

  • I turned 35 years old on the 24th.  This was probably the worst birthday of my life- I was home sick, didn’t do anything, and in bed with NyQuil by 9 PM.
  • We accepted an offer on the cabin – only to find out the financing fell through, so back to square one 😦
  • Due to a 2 week cold, didn’t get much new content up on the website, but still had 3rd highest traffic ever!
  • English Premier league soccer has started up again, so my Saturday/Sunday Mornings are booked up again.  Also got my Jets season tickets in the mail…I can’t believe hockey season is almost here already.
  • Took the kids to my favorite sports bar/diner for the first time:

  • The mall near our house was allowing kids to come and paint a tile, which will be hung up and displayed as part of a new mosaic wall in the mall, so we took the kids to each paint a tile, and of course had to stop at the food court after and get donuts:)

Financial Highlights for August:

  • Continued bi weekly payments into RRSPs & Spousal RSP.

  • Even with no new stock purchases, dripped 21 new shares/units.  I was paid from 6 companies and 1 funds

Awesome work on the dividend and drip front Jordan! Love all them drips.

That sucks about your cottage and birthday. Hope your feeling better now snd your cottage sells for mad stacks.

Very cool about the kids mall tile thing. Would be neat to go there in 10 years and show them their work on the walls.

    anyways keep it up man

  2. MM –

Nice job this month and looks like the kids enjoyed their time, especially the doughnut. I haven’t had one in forever, actually, so damn you!! haha.

Joking – but great growth and solid results. Great to see the income grow through reinvestment and the portfolio just continue to build and compound. Time does wonders.

  3. Happy belated birthday, Jordan! Nice job on the total passive income for August. That’s a nice chunk of change. And congrats on your portfolio hitting an all-time high. Hope you had a great summer.

  4. Jordan! Once again, happy belated bday! and happy birthday to your wife as well. Being sick on your bday sucks big time. Glad you enjoyed the outing with the kids. I like what your mall is doing, putting up hand painted tiles is very creative. And it’s fun for the kids.

As your portfolio goes, holy smokes! 68K YOY increase that’s more then the overall size of my portfolio!

I noticed you’re dripping DIV. What are your thoughts about DIV.TO? They need at least another royalty deal to cover the dividend. Right now they are burning the cash they received from restaurant royalty sale.

    • I’m up about 21% on DIV since I originally bought. I’ve contemplated taking profits and moving into something else, but they haven’t let me down yet. Mr. Lube has been super solid, and it sounds like they have been looking to make one more big acquisition….I’d rather they wait and make a solid purchase rather than rush into something they regret later. They are still sitting on quite a bit of cash, so they have some time.

If i recall, I read management was buying a lot back as well – so they must be confident long term….i’ll keep dripping – enjoying the nice yield while I wait to see what they do.

It’s not a huge portion of my portfolio, but I am definitely liking the tax free dividend yield on cost of 8.3%

  5. Great month Jordan! Sorry to hear about your bed ridden birthday. Hopefully your feeling better. Portfolio is looking nice especially with it hitting all time highs, based on this pipeline issue the next month may be a challenge but hopefully the politics don’t affect the market too much unless of course your looking at adding to some positions. Take care and keep it up!

    • Thanks Mr. Bankz.
Was planning on initiating a bunch of positions (if the cabin sold), however that fell through…so probably going to have to wait until spring…In the mean time ill just keep up the bi weekly deposits into the ETFs/Funds.

  7. Great to see those awesome results with respect to YoY portfolio value, Jordan. That’s an outstanding amount at 35. Congrats.
Of course, let’s not forget those dividends, too. Those should continue to move up with all those DRIPs.
Sorry to hear about the cabin sale falling through. On the bright side, it gives you more time to enjoy it yet again!
