Better know a Blogger: Matthew from All About The Dividends

All About The Dividends Matt Canada

The financial blogging community is a pretty tight knit group. Although I’m new to the blogging side of things, I’ve been an audience member for over 5 years, reading people’s stories, learning from them, and following their financial journeys.  There are probably 30+ people I have been following for years, who I could tell you their investing styles, what stocks they own, and perhaps even their average dividend income just off the top of my head.  What I couldn’t do however is tell you a little more about the people behind the portfolio’s…which is what inspired me to reach out to a few of my favourites, and try  to get to know them better.

I hope you have been enjoying the previous interviews.  You can view them on my blogroll page HERE

Welcome to Volume 9 of “Better Know A Blogger”!

Why do you invest/What is your ultimate financial goal:  I invest so one day i can retire.  My ultimate goal is to receive at least $12,000 per year in dividends.

When did you start investing: About 15 years ago, at the age of 19

How long until you will be financially free (wont NEED to work): 30 years??

What will you do in retirement:  I think I would like to do some travelling, there are a few places in the world I would like to see.
Do you share your portfolio? If so, what is the current value: Yes I do, the current value is around $120,000
What is your net worth: My current networth is around $128,000

What % of your salary do you invest/save each year:   At the moment, I am not too sure.  Every year it changes.  The last two years I have invested more as I try to catch up on contribution room in my TFSA & RRSP

Do you invest in funds or individual stocks & why:  I started out in funds but moved to individual stocks.  I changed because I hated paying fees.  Also I thought the dividends would help me more with retirement income.

If I gave you $10,000 right now to invest in 1 stock – what would you pick & why:  I would say Johnson & Johnson.  JnJ is such a huge company and with an ageing population I think they are positioned nicely with all their products.  Also it continues to grow its dividend.

What was your biggest financial fuck up: In 2014 I bought Long Run Exploration.  I put all my money ($8000) into it because of it’s nice dividend.  After I bought it the price of oil tanked and the company was sold.  I lost around $6900 of my $8000.

What is the single biggest threat to humanity:  Donald J Trump

What are you most proud of & why: I am proud that I have a great mother who taught me how to save my money so I don’t have to go into lots of debt.

If you knew you only had 1 year to live – how would you spend it: Cash in my savings, and travel the world.  First I would go visit all my blogging friends, then go to Hawaii, Australia and Europe.

What is one thing most people don’t do – but everybody SHOULD do to make the world a better place:  Treat people the way they you want to be treated

  1. Hey Guys,
Two things about Matthew. I really like his dividend stock analysis. They are very clean, clear and insightful. I have tried to pattern my own to some degree off the way he does it (Imitation is the greatest form of flattery as they say). Mrs. DD and I like the Big Bang Theory too. Tom

  2. nice Matt

Your 12k goal is too low though, you probably already are half that. Set your goals higher and you will be surprised by what you can achieve!

Dam that sucks with that previous investment, We have all had expensive mistakes though.

  3. Matt is cool. Always talk to and share each other’s posts on twitter. I like hearing the Canadian perspective on respected Canadian stocks, like banks. By the way, some of those questions were classic. And I liked the editors comments to some of them. The leafs lol. But Canadian beer is great. How does any Canadian not have a favorite?

  4. Thanks for featuring Matthew! It’s cool to learn more about different bloggers and dividend investor’s. I’ve made a lot of investment mistakes too. That’s a tough loss but at least you learned from it. Your portfolio is looking amazing btw! You might be able to reach your goal sooner. Thanks Matthew and Jordan!
