Over the next couple of weeks, I will be featuring some of my favorite bloggers and try to shed some light on their personal lives, investing philosophies and more.

I hope everyone enjoyed the previous interviews, and if you missed them you can view them on my Blogroll page HERE

Welcome to Volume 5 of “Better Know A Blogger”!

Roadmap2Retire was actually the very first financial blog I started following.  In fact, if I hadn’t stumbled across this website, I probably wouldn’t have a blog of my own.  R2R’s website really resonated with me, because like me, Sabeel is Canadian, in his 30’s, has a kid and a passion for finance.  Aside from writing about his personal financial journey, he also writes about the economy, cryptocurrency, investing strategies,in depth stock analysis’ and more!  If you haven’t checked out his site yet, make sure you do (after finishing reading this interview of course)!

Sabeel also has the best answer I have seen so far to the question: What is one thing most people don’t do – but everybody SHOULD do to make the world a better place

I’ve broken down my questions into 4 sections:

  • Personal Info
  • Financial Info
  • Deep Thoughts
  • Lightning Round

Without further ado…I’d like to introduce you to Sabeel.

Name: Sabeel

Age: Mid-30s

Where do you live:

Ottawa, Canada

Tell me something awesome about your city:

“The city that fun forgot” is what people call it 🙂 Its alright…its not all that bad. I moved to Ottawa about 12 yrs ago and find it ok, although I’m hating the weather lately. Winters too cold and summers too hot & humid. I keep telling myself that I need to move to a better place.

What do you do for a living:

Software Engineer

Are you married:

Do you have any Kids?

Pets: Yes, one kid. No pets (yet), although I always had a pet while growing up. Eventually when our daughter is slightly older, we will get a pet. and

Twitter: @Roadmap2Retire

Why do you blog:

I started it off as a learning/teaching tool and indulge in my interest to write, but it has evolved into something different. It has become a public log of my thoughts and reasonings at certain times about investing and my expectations from an investment. Unless it is written down and expected outcomes logged, its hard to look back and get any feedback. The blog now serves as this tool for my own investment journey and reflection.

The other site was purely started as a way to give back to the community.

In your opinion – what is the best thing you’ve ever published (link):

Things change. What I was proud about a few years/months ago may not be as relevant now. I wont link to any particular post, but some of my recent posts have been better thought through and provide more depth than when I started blogging.

Why do you invest/What is your ultimate financial goal:

Ummm, future financial security. Isn’t that why everyone invests? Is there any other reason?

When did you start investing:

2006/2007. Started off with mutual funds, but started getting into individual stocks just as the financial crisis was starting, which turned out to be a great life-long lesson.

How long until you will be financially free (won’t NEED to work):

Dont really have a target in mind.

What will you do in retirement:

I guess continue doing what I’m doing since I love my job.

Do you share your holdings/portfolio? If so – What is your current portfolio value:

Yes for first one. No for the latter.

What % of your salary do you invest/save each year:

About 30-35%

Do you invest in funds or individual stocks & why:

Both. Funds provide the market performance that is hard to beat. Individual stocks if you get it right can provide great returns.

If I gave you $10,000 right now to invest in 1 stock – what would you pick & why:

This would be hard to answer. Is that money mine to keep? Or am I investing for you? If investing for you, what is the time horizon? What is the risk tolerance? All these factors have to be taken into account before taking a decision.

What was your biggest financial fuck up:

When I started investing at the start of 2008 financial crisis, listening to the talking heads and buying stocks in US financial institutions.

Is there a God:

When you die, what is 1 thing you hope people think of/remember you for:

Hopefully good things 🙂

Do you vote? Who did you last vote for:

Usually yes, but have skipped a few elections. Last one was voting Liberal in federal elections. Harper had to go!

What do you think the next big technological advance will be:

Lots — depends where you look. Life is going to look very different in a few years. There are massive technological disruptions on the horizon in the fields of computing & automation, transportation, energy, financials, healthcare…take a pick. Almost all aspects of life will be affected. The pace of innovation keeps getting faster and will continue to get even faster.

What is the single biggest threat to humanity:

Humans. I want off this planet before the crazy ones blow it up.

What are you most proud of & why:My life in general. Started off from very humble beginnings and am proud of how well I’ve done for myself, not just from a financial perspective, but also from the lens of health, education, thought process, emotional intelligence, the whole 9 yards. Now that I’ve written that,…I sound pretty cocky 😉

If you knew you only had 1 year to live – how would you spend it:Spend all my time with my family

What is one thing most people don’t do – but everybody SHOULD do to make the world a better place:

“Don’t be a dick” is the only mantra every person needs to follow.
